Define your authentic leadership style

Define your authentic leadership style

The Insight:

Most new managers try to copy other leaders or default to outdated command-and-control styles, leading to inconsistent decisions and team confusion. Your leadership identity is your North Star - a clear sense of your values, strengths, and leadership philosophy that guides every interaction. When you know who you are as a leader, you make faster decisions, communicate with conviction, and build trust through authenticity. This isn't about finding the "perfect" leadership style; it's about understanding your unique approach and owning it consciously.

The Tool: The Compass

4 steps to try now

01.

Define Your Core Values

Write

Write down 3-5 values that matter most to you personally (e.g., fairness, growth, transparency).

For each value, write one sentence about what it looks like in practice as a leader. Ask: "When I'm leading at my best, what principles am I demonstrating?"

These become your leadership anchors - the non-negotiables that guide your decisions when pressure mounts.

02.

Identify Your Strengths

Reflect

Reflect on moments when leadership felt effortless. What were you doing? Were you problem-solving, connecting people, or creating structure?

Write down 3 leadership strengths you naturally lean into. Consider feedback you've received: what do others consistently say you're good at?

Your leadership identity should amplify these natural gifts, not fight against them.

03.

Choose Your Metaphor

Choose

Pick a metaphor that captures how you see your role: coach, conductor, gardener, architect, or sherpa?

This isn't just creative, it shapes how you approach challenges. A "coach" develops people; a "conductor" orchestrates harmony; a "gardener" creates conditions for growth.

Your metaphor becomes shorthand for your leadership philosophy and helps you stay consistent.

04.

Leadership Statement

Write

Craft a 2-3 sentence statement: "I lead by [core approach] because I believe [fundamental belief].

My goal is to [desired impact]." Example: "I lead by asking questions and creating space for others to shine because I believe the best ideas come from collective thinking.

My goal is to build teams that feel empowered to take smart risks." Post this somewhere visible.

Define your authentic leadership style

Why it works

Clear identity reduces decision fatigue and builds authentic confidence. Teams trust leaders who are consistent and self-aware.

Use it when

You're new to leadership, feel uncertain about your approach, or notice inconsistency in your management style.

Bonus tip

Share your leadership statement with your team. It sets expectations and gives them language to understand your decisions.
